A.I. Requirements in New York

In early February 2026, Democratic Senator Patricia Fahy and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic indroduced The NY FAIR News Act (New York Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Requirements in News Act), which requires disclosure of A.I. usage in certain organizations.

There are three major parts of this law:

1. News organizations in New York must disclose when and how A.I. is used in their work.

2. A human employee must review any and all news stories, articles, audio, visuals or images created with A.I.

3. Journalists and confidential material are protected from A.I. scraping their content.

Why is This Important?

Imagine this: You're arrested one day, out of the blue. You have no memory of ever committing a crime, but you turn on the news and see something you can't believe. It's you, running out of a bank with piles of cash under your arms.

If we don't regulate A.I. in news and entertainment, this could begin happening on a scale we can't even fathom. As the technology gets better and better, our ability to distinguish it from real life gets worse, and these regulations help make sure those fears stay quiet.
