Police in Rensselaer County posted a message on their Facebook page to warn residents about an abduction that allegedly took place in the parking lot of a Home Depot on Wednesday.

The North Greenbush Police edited out the name of the person who posted it, but their allegations were terrifying - if they were true.

The post warned people about using the parking lot at the Home Depot in Rensselaer, alleging that "a friend" saw a young girl almost get abducted by 4 men "who jumped her."

The person who posted this information claimed that the young girl was helped by some police officers who were at the scene.

North Greenbush Police say this abduction claim was NOT true, refuting it on their Facebook page on Wednesday, telling residents that if the info didn't come from them, they should be wary.

"This post was seen and shared many times. This incident did not occur. Officers were at the location and arrested two individuals for stealing. There was no abduction, attempted or otherwise. The original poster relied on information told to them by a friend and it seems something was lost in translation." - North Greenbush Police, Facebook
The North Greenbush Police warned about other potential sensationalist posts like this one, explaining that they're usually perpetuated "by people overseas using our local buy/sell/trade pages or similar."

Police also told residents that if the information didn't come from a trusted source, use caution. "If it is a situation, like this one, that would definitely be a public concern, I would be posting about it as soon as possible. If it didn't come from us, be wary of it."
