Rooting for the home team
As I die-hard Yankee fan, I was bummed when my Bombers lost to the Red Sox early in this year's MLB playoffs, but I was happy to turn my attention to Ian Anderson and the Atlanta Braves. But last night, I'll be honest with you, I was actually rooting against the Braves. Kinda crazy,...
Any baseball expert in the world would qualify 5 scoreless, and hitless, World Series innings as a major contribution to a team's championship. However, the Capital Region doesn't need any experts to tell them how special Ian Anderson is and neither do the Braves. Now, the player who grew up in Rexford and pitched for the Shenendehowa High School Plainsmen gets to flash some pretty incredible bling around town.
It's been a good year for Clifton Park, New York when it comes to a personal attachment to the highest levels of professional sports, especially in the playoffs. This summer the Saratoga County town went hoops crazy for their budding NBA star, Kevin Huerter of the Atlanta Hawks. Huerter and his Hawks knocked off the popular local favorite New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA playoffs and had an impressive run to the Eastern Conference Finals with Kevin right in the middle of their success. But, it's another Atlanta team and Huerter's Shenendehowa high school teammate that has the 12065 going crazy, the Atlanta Braves Ian Anderson.
One thing is for sure, Shenendehowa High School grad, Ian Anderson of the Atlanta Braves likes it when the heat of the season gets turned up high, especially in the postseason. On Monday, Anderson delivered another gem for his National League East regular season champions in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. The former Plainsman shutdown the powerful Milwaukee Brewers line-up for 5 innings, giving up no runs on 3 hits while striking out 6.
Fortunately for the New York Yankees, they had their lethal secret weapon in right field, Giancarlo Stanton. The big power hitter has been, for the most part, limited to the Designated Hitter role during his nearly four year stint in the Big Apple. Stanton was a solid outfielder in his years in Miami. In 2012, he won Wilson's Defensive Player of the Year. Now, for the past four weeks, Giancarlo has been a semi regular outfielder and it may be helping his hitting. Over Stanton's last 7 games, he is batting .400 with 3 homeruns and 8 RBI.
With the Braves now 4 games behind the Mets and the Phillies 3, game two took on crucial importance. The organization believes that starting pitching help is on the way in a few days, via trades, Carlos Carasco, etc. but that didn't help last night. New York's bullpen was called upon to pitch 7 innings and win...and win they did.
Year after year, Matt would come “home” to Bethlehem and work with the local baseball teams not for money. He was just being a good guy. Quatraro will be a major league manager in the next few years. His name is constantly mentioned in big league managerial searches. There are only 30 of those jobs in the world. Pretty cool representative of the 518.
