Could Islanders and Rangers Be Left Out of NHL Playoffs?

On the notion though that the playoffs could start right away in the conventional form, I would be outraged and I am not even as an Islanders fan! The have played two less games then the Blue Jacksets who are in front of them by just 1 point. It would be a travesty in my opinion if the NHL didn't at least give teams on the edge even a chance in an unprecedented situation!
