As previously reported, a name change has been in the works for The Carrier Dome, home of Syracuse University athletics.

The company Carrier Global signed a naming rights agreement with the university in 1979, and was considered to have a "lifetime contract" as the official naming rights partner of the legendary Upstate sports venue.

In recent years, however, the relationship began to sour somewhat, as the deal began to make less and less financial sense to Syracuse. In April, it was announced that the dome would be undergoing a naming rights change, and suitors began to line up throughout Onondaga County and beyond.

The list of names was narrowed down, and now, we have a winner.

Syracuse's Carrier Dome Has a New Name, and This is It

As reported by a number of news outlets, including ESPN, Syracuse University has agreed to a contract with tech company JMA Wireless for the naming rights to their domed athletic facility. Beginning with the 2022-23 school year, the venue formerly known as The Carrier Dome will now be known as The JMA Wireless Dome.

The university released a video introducing the new name partnership:

As reported in ESPN's story, this deal is inked for ten years, and one would have to imagine that both parties will be eager to continue it beyond that point. JMA is based in Syracuse, and creates infrastructure that allows major venues to have 5G wireless capabilities for those who attend events there.

JMA has grown from a local business to a national powerhouse, having just recently installed 5G technology in SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. That particular deal was brokered in part by a third party, former Syracuse Director of Athletics Daryl Gross, who recently sued the company for money he believed he was owed as part of the contract.

High-Tech Renovations Part of Busy Summer at The Dome

For those who follow Syracuse closely, this naming rights agreement likely isn't a shock. Syracuse contracted JMA Wireless as part of major renovations being done in the dome this summer. JMA was brought in to create a "state-of-the-art digital venue" experience for Syracuse Orange fans, boosting the technological capabilities of the nearly 50-year old venue.

Other rumored renovations included improved seating (less bleacher seats), an event center attached to the main building, and the previously-mentioned tech upgrades.

According to Ticketmaster, the first scheduled event in the newly-named dome will be a Paul McCartney concert, happening on June 4th. The first scheduled home game for the Syracuse Orange football team is Saturday, September 3rd against Louisville.
