UAlbany Lacrosse Draws Big, Middle-of-the-Week Crowd
I was stunned that close to 3,100 fans turned out to watch UAlbany and Maryland in men’s lacrosse on Wednesday. I never thought a 4pm middle of the week game would produce that many fans. But it shows me the popularity of the sport and how educated fans are in the Capital District. It was a matchup of two top 5 teams in the country and lacrosse fans rearranged their schedules to see it. And they got their money’s worth despite UAlbany losing 12-11.
The Danes jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Terrapins showed why they've been able to knock off some of the top teams in the country this season and why they reached the NCAA Championship game last year. Despite the loss, a lot of what people in and around the program have told me appears to be true: that this just might be the best, most well-balanced UAlbany team under head coach Scott Marr. A first trip to the Final Four could be a month away.
