Last week we honored the Shen boys' basketball big men for their offseason commitment with our Athlete of the Week award, and today, we head to the diamond.

On the diamond, we find Columbia High School rising sophomore Matt Wimmer.

Wimmer helped lead the 14-year-old Sorensco Babe Ruth team to the Eastern New York State Championship on Thursday night. Wimmer worked three scoreless innings in relief in the championship game. He also had the game-winning hit in extra innings as Sorensco beat Orange County, 1-0, in eight innings.

Sorensco went a perfect 6-0 for the tournament and won the tournament for the second straight year.

Wimmer and his teammates will next head to Nottingham, Southern New Jersey, for the Middle-Atlantic Regional tournament. Play begins July 28th and the winner goes to the Babe Ruth World Series in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Wimmer spent the 2015 high school season playing for Columbia's JV team, and will look to make the varsity team in 2016.
