The most popular player on a struggling team is often the backup quarterback.  However, there is a second part to this thought.

There is no doubt that the majority of fans will clamor for a backup quarterback on a struggling team to be the starter.  This happens all of the time.  However, there is an important footnote to this thought that is often overlooked; most backup quarterbacks are backups for a reason.

Sure, there are times where teams actually improve thanks to the backup quarterback being inserted into the starting lineup.  Tom Brady has done just fine, thank you.  The Denver Broncos improved last season with Tim Tebow as their starting QB.  Making a move has led to success at times, but not every time.

Most fans fall into the trap of thinking that the backup quarterback will automatically be better than the current starter.  Many times, this theory turns out to be proven wrong.  We’ll see if Rex Ryan pulls the plug on Mark Sanchez in favor of Tim Tebow.  We’ll see how the season unfolds.  You can listen to every Jets game on 104.5 The Team, ESPN Radio.  The Jets have a bye week.  They’ll face the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday at 4:05pm.
