Former New York Mets’ ‘Co-Ace’ Ends Tenure with Embarrassing Finale

It's fair to assume that neither the New York Mets, nor Max Scherzer, were happy about Tuesday's MLB Trade Deadline. The two sides, which has united less than two years ago thanks to a record-breaking contract, parted ways in the form of a trade this week.

On his way out the door, Scherzer decided that he would expose critical details about his now-former team to the media, punishing innocent fans and setting New York back years in the process.

This was the latest in a long line of embarrassing headlines about the team in Queens.

'Mad Max' Shares Confidential Details About Mets in Immature Finale

On the heels of being traded from the New York Mets to the Texas Rangers, now-former Mets' hurler Max Scherzer had a lot to say on his way out the door. Scherzer shared details from his conversation with the New York front office, details that the team likely would've preferred to keep behind closed doors.

Here's a snippet of what Scherzer said, via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic:

According to Scherzer, “I was like, ’OK, are we reloading for 2024?’  [Eppler] goes, ’No, we’re not.  Basically our vision now is for 2025-2026, ’25 at the earliest, more like ’26.  We’re going to be making trades around that.’  I was like, ’So the team is not going to be pursuing free agents this offseason or assemble a team that can compete for a World Series next year?’  He said, ’No, we’re not going to be signing the upper-echelon guys.  We’re going to be on the smaller deals within free agency. ‘24 is now looking to be more of a kind of transitory year.’ ”

He goes on, but Mets' fans might not be able to handle another word of his tirade.

Look, Max Scherzer is an adult, and one of the best pitchers of a generation. If he wants to air out dirty laundry via the media, then it's his prerogative, and there's nothing we, as fans, can do to stop him.

All I'll say is this: I think it's immature and embarrassing for Scherzer to treat his former team this way. The Mets paid him a TON of money for a pitcher at his age, and when it was clear that the team was no longer in contention, they did their due diligence to ensure that both sides, the Mets and Scherzer, would be put in the best situations to succeed.

Now, Scherzer has told everyone that the Mets are going to suck for another one or two seasons before being legitimate contenders again. That may be true, and it also may end up being false.

Either way, if you're a top player (like, oh, I don't know, Shohei Ohtani) who is set to become a free agent, would you even take a call from Steve Cohen and the New York Mets? After all, you've been told that the team is not planning on competing next year, so why would you want to sign there?

It's a pretty low-class move from Scherzer, and one that he easily could've avoided.
