In a shocking turn of events, the United States Patent Office decided, on Wednesday, that it could no longer protect the "Washington Redskins" - that the nickname is, as many have argued for the last few years, a racist slur.

As a result, owner Dan Snyder and the NFL will no longer have exclusivity rights on the team name; anyone in the world is now free to sell merchandise including the "Redskins" name.

It is a monumental decision that could bring an end to the raging debate over whether or not the NFL should change the nickname of their Washington franchise.
