There were 24 games on the Section 2 high school football schedule for the final Friday of September. Big road wins, close games and upsets highlighted the halfway point of the gridiron season. Other games saw some of the Capital Region's most highly ranked teams continue to roll in 2022.
There were 38 teams suiting up in Section 2 for Friday night football this week with some pretty dramatic match-ups for WEEK 2. The biggest game of the evening was #1 CBA visiting #3 Shaker, played in front of a packed house in Latham. There were two big upsets, including one road-team victory in Ravena.
No offense to the fine people of Binghamton but the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys basketball championship is back where it belongs, Glens Falls. The championship left the north country for the southern tier in 2017. A few years and a pandemic later, the boys are back home at the Cool Insuring Arena. The girls basketball championships continue to enjoy the awesome facilities at Hudson Valley Community College. Let's take a look at which Section II teams are playing this weekend.
The Section 2 champions have been crowned. The celebrations were fun but it is back to business for some Capital Region high school boys basketball teams. The next goal will be winning a state championship. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has set the brackets. The high school basketball season can be long and grueling from November through March. Now add the lose and go home stress of any sectional tournament, and the result will be a ton of ups and downs. There are amazing accomplishments that haven't happened in 55 years and tremendous disappoints for teams that were basically expected to win. These boys and girls are 15 to 18 years old. When you get to this stage of the season, these student-athletes, along with their dedicated coaches have put a lot into their season. It means more.
As high school basketball heads into the last weekend of January, coaches, players and fans begin to focus in on who may be in their school's way of a championship. This is the time of year when coaches try to make sure their best players aren't getting too worn down, while winning every game possible. Let's check out the top teams in each division in Section 2.
It was a cold Wednesday night in the Capital Region but some high school basketball teams brought their own heat to the Section II scoreboard. There were 10 match-ups in boys basketball on the schedule and 14 more for the girls. A big congratulations goes out to Tom Galvin the girls basketball coach at Bishop Maginn. Tom won his 400th game as a head coach on Tuesday with their decisive win over Loudonville Christian.

Ten of the top Section II high school football teams in their Classes faced off this weekend for their championships. Surprises are plenty this time of year. Regular season dominators, like undefeated Shaker High School, fell to red hot teams like Shenendehowa in the AA semi-finals. Then there were teams like Ravena that got pounded by Glens Falls 42-0 in the last week of the regular season, only to turn around the next week and see Ravena upset Glens Falls 35-28 in the semis. That's what happens in mid November in high school football. Friday and Saturday teams played for the crowns.
Friday Night Lights glamorized and dramatized high school football on TV. Different areas have various levels of enthusiasm for the gridiron. In the Capital Region, this is a huge weekend coming up that will draw the attention of thousands of local fans and students. Section II high school football enjoys it's brightest spotlight this week as the Section II football committee announced the Class AA, Class A, Class C and Class D championship times and locations on Sunday.
