The Season Ends For Siena
It was a valiant effort but in the end it was a loss. The Saints, despite being shorthanded won 1 game in the MAAC tourney but couldn’t take down 2nd seed Loyola Maryland, losing Sunday 70-60 thus ending the their season at 14-17.With a record below 500 in both the conference and over all you wouldn’t think a post season tournament invite is forthcoming.
A 5 point game at half saw Siena actually grab an early 8 point lead, however Loyola went on a 13-2 run to take the 5 point margin at the break. The 2nd half saw Loyola winning by the same 5 points. Siena led 17-9 but right after LMU went on a 13-2 run and that was that.
A Siena win would have given them a golden opportunity to steal an NCAA bid as top seed Iona lost to Fairfield. The big question now is will the MAAC get 2 bids as Iona finished 24-5 and has some marquee players that like to get up and down the floor, just the kind of team the NCAA tourney likes. Monday night Fairfield, the 4th seed takes on Loyola for the automatic berth. It seems at least 1 bid has been swiped from at an large from a power conference as it is doubtful either of these 2 clubs would have been given an invote to the NCAA’S.
Just as they did in the thrilling OT win over Manhatten the night before in OT Siena employed a 6 man team as Freshman Evan Hymes hobbled thru a few minutes off the bench. Kyle Downey led the Saints with 17 points. O.D. Anosike finished up the 2 game tourney in dissapointing fashion totaling but 13 points and only 6 rebounds. Owen Wignot had 16 points for the Saints.
Erik Etherly led the Greyhounds with 21 points. Loyola is 23-8 over all and 13-5 in the MAAC. Fairfield dumped Iona 85-75 setting up the matchup for the league conference title Monday night. Focus will now turn to head coach Mitch Buonaguro whose 2 year tenure has produced records of 13-18 and now 14-17 after he replaced current iowa head man Fran Mccafrey. Ironically Buonaguro led Fairfield to 2 NCAA tournaments when he coached their for 5 years. Overall in his long career as a head coach and stints as an assistant Byonaguro is 99-138.
