Afrim’s Bringing New Indoor Sports Facility to Saratoga County
When the Sportsplex of Halfmoon closed suddenly it looked as if there wouldn't be another indoor sports facility in Saratoga County. But now Afrim's announced they will be adding another location north of the Twin Bridges. In a kind of cool twist, the turf and the plexiglass that was in the Sportsplex will be used in the new Afrim's location.
Years ago when I was in high school, we used to travel to Malta and play indoor soccer at the Charbonneau Recreation Center. That facility was around for about twenty years and then it became the Tree Paad where I attended many kids' birthday parties. The Tree Paad closed suddenly two years ago but now this space will become Afrim's fourth location.
According to the Albany Business Review, the location on Route 9 in Malta will be called Afrim's Sports Malta. Much like Afrim's other locations in Latham, on Watervliet Shaker Road in Colonie, and in Bethlehem, Malta will have an artificial turf field for soccer and lacrosse players to use and it will also house community events.
The owner of Afrim's, Afrim Nazaj, said that moving into Saratoga County is exciting for him.
That area has shown a lot of growth. There are buildings and housing going up there every day. I think our programs will do well up there.
He also cites the building of the GlobalFoundries plant that not only brought jobs to the area but also families and communities.
I am excited too. I will be moving to the Mechanicville area which is closer to the new Afrim's Sports Malta facility. Who knows, maybe I will break out the turf shoes and play in an old lady indoor soccer league or maybe Ryan will have some games there so I don't have to drive so far to bring him.
