Seems you can cross the name "Johnny Damon" off the list of possible Yankee  DH desires. Reports indicate that Damon contacted the Yanks about returning to fill their vacant DH position. Damon wasn't re-signed by the Tampa Bay Rays after last season.

The Yanks are believed to have been courting or looking at three possibilities to fill the roll. Damon, Former Yank Hideki Matsui, and former Phillie OF Raul Ibanez. Ibanez looks to be the odds on favorite at this point as the Yanks like the fact that he can play a competent OF if needed. Both Damon and Matsui don't impress the Yanks with their glove work.

It should also be noted the DH search had included another former Yankee, Bobby Abreu, but the Yanks failed to acquire Abreu by dealing A.J Burnett to the Angels. Burnett turned down a deal to the Angels and instead was sent to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Damon is chasing immortality and history. He currently has 2,723 hits as he chases 3000 and what would seem to be a ticket to Cooperstown although the debate on that will be interesting.

Damon reportedly spoke with Yankee GM Brian Cashman about a return to the Bronx but was told he wasn't the number-one choice. Damon said quote, "we are both looking at other options right now".
