Lake Placid Could Make Another Run

Forty-five years after the “Miracle on Ice,” New York leaders are quietly pushing to bring the Winter Olympics back to the Adirondacks.

Considering how large this global event has become, it still feels surreal that the Olympics once took place basically in our backyard, and now sources say Lake Placid could make another run.

I was too young to remember much about the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, but I vividly remember having the official poster hanging on my bedroom wall, and over the years, I've really grown to appreciate how little ol' Upstate NY pulled this off.

Miracle in Upstate NY

CBS 6 News in Albany reported that Governor Kathy Hochul has launched a full-court press, and discussions are underway to bring the Winter Olympics back to Lake Placid for the first time since the legendary 1980 Games.

Of course, those games are forever tied to the unforgettable “Miracle on Ice,” when Team USA stunned the Soviet Union in one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

Soonest Would be 2042

The timeline would still be a long way off.

France is set to host in 2030, Salt Lake City gets the Games in 2034, and Switzerland is considered a favorite for 2038. That means the earliest realistic opportunity for Lake Placid would likely be 2042.

Hochul reportedly told The Athletic that the idea could also include events held at New York City venues as part of a broader statewide Olympic plan.

Honestly, just imagining the Olympic rings back in the Adirondacks again is pretty incredible.
