Capital Region Teens Take Stolen SUV for Joyride

Two Capital Region teenagers are facing serious charges after State Police say a stolen-car joyride ended in a crash and a second vehicle theft Sunday morning.

According to New York State Police, the chain of events began around 9:26 a.m. on Sunday morning. That's when, according to the report, troopers were called to the Walmart parking lot on Hoosick Road in Brunswick for reports of a stolen SUV.

Roughly an hour later, troopers say they spotted the vehicle traveling on North Pearl Street in Watervliet and attempted a traffic stop. Police say the driver failed to comply, and a pursuit was initiated. Troopers eventually were forced to stop the chase after losing sight of the SUV.

Just minutes later, Watervliet Police located the stolen vehicle after it crashed into another car near 2nd Street.

Authorities say a 14-year-old was behind the wheel and a 15-year-old was in the passenger seat. Both teens were taken into custody at the scene.

The Situation Didn't End There

During the investigation, police determined that while driving the stolen SUV through Albany, the 15-year-old allegedly stole a second vehicle. That vehicle was later found abandoned less than a block from where it had been taken.

The 14-year-old faces charges including criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. The 15-year-old was charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

Both juveniles were processed at State Police Latham, issued appearance tickets, and released to their guardians. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.
