Stewart’s Shop in Mechanicville Closing-What This Means to Locals

I found out that the Stewart's in my hometown is closing. I understand that it is a business decision, but it doesn't sit well with me.

I grew up in Mechanicville, and it is a close-knit small town where you can still walk to many places. Stewart's is one of them. I heard from many in the city who were disappointed about the closing. Many walk to this Stewart's to get the newspaper, coffee, ice cream, and other incidentals, such as milk and bread.

One of the prominent families and the owner of a business that has been in Mechanicville for nearly a century was also upset about this Stewart's closing. So much so, he called the president of Stewart's to discuss it. Apparently, the decision was based on revenue. That Stewart's just isn't profitable.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the brand-new Stewart's that is on Central Ave in Mechanicville. Many residents love that one too, but the one on Park Ave that is closing is just more convenient to walk to and to shop in. I think one of the downfalls of this location is that they don't have gas pumps. If they had, maybe it would have kept the store open. We may never know.

I am all about nostalgia, but I am not one to combat change. This one, though, seems personal. It feels like my hometown is losing a meeting place, not just a convenience store. I am also concerned that it will either remain empty after it closes, or something will open there that just doesn't feel the same.

The Stewart's Shop on Park Avenue in Mechanicville will close on March 1st.
