Veterans Day is fast approaching. It's a day meant to honor our bravest men and women, who have taken the ultimate risk to protect our nation.

During the holiday, Veterans will get perks from every conceivable place to thank them for their service, and the Capital District Transportation Authority is jumping on that train (or bus).

Free Rides for Veterans

On Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11th, the CDTA will be offering free rides to Veterans on fixed routes throughout the Capital Region. This includes military veterans, active duty military, National Guard, and Reserve members, as well as all service men and women with valid military ID.

Veterans Day is still a holiday, however, which means a few lines will not be operational. These include the commuter express services Northway Xpress (NX) and Thruway Xpress (TX). The sales window in Albany at 85 Watervliet Avenue will be closed in honor of the holiday, but reopen at 9a.m. the next day.

Half-Off for Veterans

While the CDTA may only be offering free rides for Veterans on Veterans Day, their appreciation for our service men and women goes year-round. Veterans who have been honorably discharged can qualify for half-fare pricing on fixed routes throughout the region.

All you need is a DD-214 Form, Discharge Papers, Separation Documents, Veterans Health Identification Card, Veterans Identification Card, NYS Driver’s License with official Veterans marking, or a Return the Favor Card to qualify.

For more information on half-fare pricing or Veterans Day benefits, head to the CDTA Website or call 518-482-8822.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train Rolls Through The Capital Region For a Great Cause

It had been three years since the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train rolled through the Capital Region. It made three stops; Mechanicville, Saratoga Springs, and Fort Edward. The first was Mechanicville on a rainy Sunday night. This is where I enjoyed the festive holiday train. They are traveling across the country to 106 stops. At each stop, they play live music and collect donations for the local food banks. Country Artist Lindsay Ell was the musical entertainment and she was awesome. The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train also presented the Mechanicville Community Center with a check for $3500 to help restock the food bank. Even though the weather wasn't ideal, a couple of hundred families joined the fun.
