We haven’t even made it to Thanksgiving, and the flu is already making itself known. If you keep saying, “I need to get my flu shot,” consider this your reminder to move it up the list.

New York’s report for the week ending October 24th shows flu case and hospitalization rates rising across the Capital Region. That includes Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Rensselaer counties, plus surrounding counties.

Across New York, there were 4,172 confirmed cases that week, a 13 percent increase. Flu hospitalizations jumped 40 percent to 326. Those numbers are statewide, but they give us a reason to pay attention now.

Did You Miss Your Chance to Get a Flu Shot?

Nope. October is over, but you haven’t missed your chance.

The CDC recommends continuing flu vaccinations while the virus is circulating. Protection takes about two weeks to develop, so getting your shot now gives your body time to respond before the Thanksgiving visits, crowded kitchens, and family gatherings.

Getting vaccinated doesn’t guarantee you won’t catch the flu. It can, however, make the illness less severe if you do.

Where Can You Get One?

CVS, Walgreens, and other pharmacies offer appointments and walk-ins for the flu shot. Your doctor or pediatrician is another option. Check availability, age requirements, and insurance coverage before going.

We all have enough to do this time of year. Spending days feeling miserable is something nobody needs on their holiday calendar.
