With Tax Day approaching on Tuesday, April 18, the IRS has a little-known tip for New Yorkers that could save you extra money.

If you have a 2022 gross adjusted income at or below $73,000, you qualify for the IRS’ Free File Alliance. As of the 2020 Census, the average individual income in New York was $35,379. This means about 70% of New Yorkers qualify for Free File.

Free File Alliance Executive Director Tim Hugo says, “The Free File program has provided over 68 million returns valued at an estimated $2 billion in free tax software over the last 21 years, and we hope to see even more taxpayers take advantage of the service in 2023.” It’s the same exact software you would typically pay $100+ to use, but at no cost whatsoever.

How To File Taxes For Free In New York

The IRS' Free File Alliance allows New Yorkers with a gross adjusted income of $73k or less to file taxes for free using top software providers.

The IRS warns filers not search for free file providers on Google, because of heavy advertising and misleading claims from brands on the page results. Free File Alliance members will not offer hidden charges or upcharges through the process.

You HAVE to start your filing at IRS.gov/FreeFile. You won’t get Free File status if you start directly from a partner site. From there you can choose an IRS Free File provider that will give you a special link to the partner of your choice.

2023 Free File Alliance members are:

  • TaxSlayer
  • 1040Now, Inc.
  • FileYourTaxes.com
  • FreeTaxUSA
  • On-Line Taxes, Inc.
  • TaxAct
  • ezTaxReturn.com (English and Spanish)

There’s still a free e-file option for New York residents above the $73,000 line, but have your calculator ready.  The IRS site has Free File Fillable Forms, which are equivalent to a paper 1040 that you would mail in if doing your own taxes.
