Too many restaurants and cafes across the Capital Region have been forced to shutter in 2022. The economic downturn from COVID has morphed into inflation and supply chain issues that put many in the food-service industry in a difficult place. Amid the constant wave of closings, its worth celebrating when a new restaurant opens its doors.

Less than two weeks after a popular downtown Troy coffee shop closed its doors for good, a replacement has been found. It’s certainly good news for Capital Region coffee lovers, and the new business’ name will definitely sound familiar.

In October, Spill’n the Beans Coffeehouse and Bistro announced they would close their 3rd Street location after 19 years. The café cited the post-pandemic labor shortage, rising food cost, and an extended disagreement with their landlord over upkeep. Halloween was their last day of operation.

Spill’n the Beans’ owners say while they’re leaving a brick-and-mortar location, this isn’t the end. They’ll still be regulars at Troy’s Outdoor Riverfront Farmers Market when it returns for 2023. But Troy’s caffeine lovers can still get their fix with the Albany favorite that’s now moving in on 3rd Street.

Hello Stacks

Albany Business Review reports Stacks Espresso Bar will fill the now-vacant space. Stacks currently has locations on Broadway and Lark Street in Albany. This marks a return to Troy for Stacks; the business previously had a stall in River Street Market.

Besides specialty espresso and coffee drinks, Stacks’ current locations offer breakfast, sandwiches, and salads. The Troy location will be the first Stacks to serve dinner, as well. They will also open an event space in the building. An opening day isn’t set, as Stacks is gutting and entirely remodeling the business to match the interiors of its other two Capital Region locations.
