The franchise tag is always a bit of a bummer to NFL players who want a long-term contract. However, the teams that use the tag are in favor of having the option. On Tuesday, it is expected that the New York Jets will place their exclusive franchise tag on DE Muhammad Wilkerson, preventing him from becoming a free agent for another season.

Wilkerson and the Jets are nowhere near an agreement when it comes to long-term contract talks. Wilkerson was expected to get a max-deal should he become a free agent, but now his is likely to be a large cap penalty for the Jets once he is franchise tagged.

Wilkerson is expected to be paid upwards of $15M this upcoming season.

The franchise tag deadline for all teams is 4:00 p.m. EST.

Do you think the franchise tag is a good thing for the NFL?
