
Deaths Reported from Listeria Outbreak Impacting New York, Other States
An outbreak of listeria is impacting 12 states across the country, and cases of listeriosis have been confirmed in New York.
Per a report from Forbes Magazine and other outlets, there have been 28 reported hospitalizations as a result of the outbreak. The CDC has interviewed 18 of those patients, and 16 said they'd consumed cold-cuts sliced at deli counters.
No product recalls have been made, as of yet.

Unfortunately, no state has been impacted more than New York. Here are the total confirmed case totals, broken down by state:

- Maryland (6 cases)
- Georgia (2)
- Massachusetts (2)
- Missouri (2)
- New Jersey (2)
- Virginia (2)
- Illinois (1)
- Minnesota (1)
- North Carolina (1)
- Pennsylvania (1)
- Wisconsin (1)
There have been two fatalities from this outbreak, one each in Illinois and New Jersey.
In addition to deli meats, listeria can be found in unpasteurized dairy products, raw vegetables and other ready-to-eat meats, like hot dogs. Consumers are being asked to heat up all deli meats that they purchase before eating them.
Also, it's recommended that you avoid storing meat directly next to produce, as doing so can cause further contamination of your food if your meat is tainted with the bacteria.

Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. If the infection goes untreated, it can spread to your nervous system, causing headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
