New Yorkers Say This Movie is the Perfect ‘Rom-Com’ for Valentine’s Day

As New Yorkers plan their Valentine's Day evenings, they have to make sure everything is taken care of. You need chocolates, flowers, a nice romantic dinner, and of course, a romantic movie to cap off the night.

Nothing screams romance more that data, and data from a recent study shows that couples in the area will be turning on this romantic-comedy movie more than others.

Study Data Reveals New York's Preferred Rom-Com for V-Day 2023

A story from ABC News 10 in Albany shared information gathered from CenturyLink, which ran a study to determine the most-searched-for romantic comedy movies in each state. Using data from Google and online movie databases, they were able to deduce the rom-com that was desired most often in every state in the country.

Those who were in-search of a tearjerker in New York in 2022 were searching for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind more than any other rom-com movie, according to the report.

In order to put this study together, the experts at CenturyLink compiled a list of 64 popular sad movies using Teen Vogue, Glamour, and IMDb keyword search. From there, they used two online tools, SemRush and Google Trends, to rank the movies and find the search history data from each movie in each state.

As it turns out, New York's romantic population also has extremely good taste in movies, as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the rom-com with the highest online critic rating (92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.3/10 on IMDb) of any movie on CenturyLink's list.

New York shares its favorite rom-com with four other states, but the Empire State's pick for best picture wasn't nearly as popular as Titanic, which was the rom-com-of-choice in an astounding 23 states.

Here were the top five romantic comedy movies that America was Googling in the past 365 days:

1. Titanic
2. Ghost
3. A Star is Born
4. La La Land
5. Brokeback Mountain

Meanwhile, here are the movies that states surrounding New York chose as their favorite in 2022:

• Massachusetts: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
• Connecticut: Titanic
• Vermont: Titanic
• New Jersey: Titanic
• Pennsylvania: Titanic
• New Hampshire: Ghost

So, while most of the country will be telling their loved ones that their hearts will go on, the data shows that New Yorkers will be asking their Valentine's Day date to let them keep this memory, just this one.
