Cal Ripken, Jr. had just broken Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak. There was no Netflix. Not even DVD players had reached existence. Coolio's 'Gangsta's Paradise' was number 1 on Billboard's top 10. The year was 1995; the last time NewsChannel 13 debuted a new set.

Now, after nearly 23 years of service, that set is no longer charming or worn-in or full of character. It's worn out and dated to the degree of distraction. The anchor desk backdrop includes a picture of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. (Gingrich last held office in 1999.) And so, it's out with the old and in with the new. This is an exciting time at NewsChannel 13 as the top station in the market works to improve the viewing experience.

On Saturday morning, the renovation of WNYT's studio started with a new set expected to be in place for the start of May sweeps. In some instances, a fresh coat of paint and some new furniture can transform a room. This is not one of those instances. Think full-on Fixer Upper or Good Bones from HGTV. The structure stays, everything else goes. Stay tuned for updates.
