Electric bikes have become an incredibly common sight throughout the capital region.  Both on the street and sidewalks, these E-bikes are now a much faster and easier method of transportation for the average commuter. However, they can still be dangerous and lead to serious accidents and injuries when not used properly. Town leaders in Niskayuna are stepping up efforts to ensure riders are aware of the rules surrounding these bikes, in order to avoid serious injuries.

Niskayuna police and town officials have said they aren't looking to ban E-bikes, instead their goal is to explore more safety measures and focus on education, as many residents do not fully understand New York State laws regarding E-bikes.

Some residents have voiced concerns regarding E-bikes being ridden in traffic lanes, on sidewalks at high speeds, and young riders using these E-bikes. According to Niskayuna police chief Jordan Kochan, New York State law says riders must be 16 years of age. He also mentions that class 1 and class 2 E-bikes are generally allowed on roads with speed limits of 30 MPH or less.

This added interest in the safety regarding E-bikes comes following a few crashes involving these bikes, one in which a bike hit a vehicle, and another where a rider ran a stop sign and hit a vehicle. There is also no mandate for riders to wear a helmet on E-bikes, something the Complete Streets Committee is looking to have changed.

William Chapman, the chair of Niskayuna's Complete Streets Committee, also said the town has plans for road improvements underway, including a $1 million state grant to build sidewalks connecting neighborhoods to local elementary schools.
