Over the next couple of days, you might see members of law enforcement out on the roads. But they won't be in their cars.  They'll be on foot.

You will see them running and carrying a torch.  They're called "Torch Runs" and they're being done for the Special Olympics.

What is a "Torch Run?"

A Torch Run is a time-honored tradition that is done by members of law enforcement to raise money and awareness of the Special Olympics.  It is orchestrated by people known as the "Guardians of the Flame."  It was started in 1983 in Kansas City and has become the largest public awareness and fundraising group for Special Olympics.

Members of many law enforcement agencies in New York will be running alongside athletes and supporters of Special Olympics and carrying a torch that is known as "The Flame of Hope."
