Now is the perfect time to get rid of that old couch you simply don't have space for. The city of Troy is hosting a citywide bulk pickup program for the first time since the 1990s. The free, one- time program is set to begin at the end of July, and is available to anyone whose properties receive City of Troy sanitation collection services.

Residents in the area can place bulk items like mattresses, furniture, etc alongside their garbage on their curb prior to the scheduled collection date with no registration required. Mayor Carmella Mantello says "Not everyone has the ability to haul furniture, mattresses, or other bulk items across the city. That’s why we’re bringing this service directly to our residents’ curbs. This one-time service removes that barrier, makes disposal more convenient, and continues our commitment to building a safer, cleaner Troy."

The city is asking any bulk materials be neatly stacked in a pile not to exceed 6 feet by 6 feet. On the City of Troy website there is a full list of acceptable and prohibited items for the bulk cleanup.

As someone who has both spent plenty of time in Troy, and has moved plenty of furniture, I know it is not an easy task, especially in a big city. The cleanup is scheduled to run from Monday July 27th until Friday August 7th. The schedule runs as follows.

Monday July 27th

• Streets from Hoosick to 101st Street from Oakwood Avenue to the Hudson River, including Frear Avenue, Summit Avenue, and Fairview Avenue.

Tuesday July 28th

• All streets from 101st to 109th from the Hudson River to the Bike Trail.

Wednesday July 29th

• All streets from 109th to 118th from the Hudson River to the Bike Trail.

Thursday July 30th

• All streets from 118th Street to the City Line from the Hudson River to the Bike Trail.

Friday July 31st

• Streets from Oakwood Avenue to North Lake Avenue from Hoosick Street to Northern Drive, including Lori Jean Place, Red Rock Road, Gurley Avenue, Livingston Road, Hialeah Drive, Miami Estates, and High Point

Monday August 3rd

• All streets from Hoosick Street to Congress Street from the Hudson River to 15th Street, including Walnut Street, Birch Street, and Hale Street

Tuesday August 4th

• All streets from Hoosick Street to Brunswick Road from 15th Street to South Lake Avenue, including Cheryl Court and Mt. Pleasant Avenue

Wednesday August 5th

• All streets from Brunswick Road to the Wynantskill City Line from Spring Avenue to Art Street

Thursday August 6th

• All streets from the junction of Campbell and Spring to the City Line from Thompson Street to Stowe Avenue

Friday August 7th

• All streets from Congress Street to Main Street from the Hudson River to Spring Avenue
