The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is warning all who wish to fly next year to get their REAL IDs. The new forms of identification will be needed by next year at this time in all the United States airports to board an airplane as per the federal government. A regular license or non-driver ID will not be accepted if you wish to fly within the United States starting May 3, 2023.

You Can Get Information at the Airport

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles says the time is now to get a REAL ID or an Enhanced ID. There are informational tables already set up in airports throughout New York state. They include Albany International Airport, Syracuse Hancock International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Don't Wait to Get Your REAL ID

You are urged to not wait until next year to get your REAL ID or Enhanced ID. They say the time is now to get it done. According to a DMV press release, the Commissioner said,

I encourage customers to visit our website, and social media pages, or talk to our staff at the airports to find out what they need to apply for a REAL ID or Enhanced ID so they can be successful on their first visit to a DMV office.

How Much is This Going to Cost Me?

Every new document or license comes at a cost. For all New Yorkers whose licenses or IDs are up for renewal, there is no additional cost to renew. If you have a license and you wish to upgrade now without waiting it will cost an extra $12.50.

If you get an Enhanced ID it would cost $30 extra. This can be used as identification when you come back to the US by car or boat from Mexico, Canada, and certain countries in the Caribbean.

Before You Go to The DMV

New Yorkers must use the document guide to help determine which documents are needed to bring in to get your REAL ID. The guide only takes a few minutes to fill out and has a series of short questions to figure out which documents and proof of identification you need to bring with you. Only original documents, or certified copies of certain documents, will be accepted. You need to go to a local DMV office with the documents to prove who you are. You will also have to get a new picture taken. You have to make an appointment to do so.
