The No.2 Kansas Jayhawks got upset by No.7 Wichita State over the weekend but Dick Vitale does not believe that the blame should fall on KU head coach Bill Self.

“I think they overachieved,” said Vitale, on Monday, with Armen and Levack on 104.5 The Team. “It’s a situation where they win the Big 12 and I thought Bill Self got the maximum out of that team when you compare them talent-wise to the teams of the past.

“I’ll say this, I don’t think this Kansas team was a vintage Kansas team. They lost the kid Cliff Alexander, the NCAA investigation hurt them big time.”

It had not been since the early 90’s that Kansas had agreed to play Wichita State and in a Disney-like story, the Shockers waited for their chance to play in the Jayhawks in the NCAA Tournament and completely seized the moment with a 78-65 victory, having control of the game throughout.

“For twenty two years they waited for this opportunity. They got a chance and the Shockers really went out there and played brilliant basketball. They had five guys in double figures.

“[It was] a special moment for Shocker nation. Whenever you get the chance to play the Goliath and get an opportunity, you just want to make sure you play your best and they did. They got that ‘W’.

“You should’ve read the Wichita Eagle. I went there right away after they won. You talk about a banner headline. Oh man, it was unbelievable!”

Wichita State takes on No.3 Notre Dame this Thursday at 7:15p EST in the Sweet Sixteen.

Dick Vitale joins Armen and Levack every Monday and Thursday at 5:15p EST during the NCAA Tournament, thanks to McClane Food Service.
