Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner was on with Michael Kay on ESPN New York 98.7 FM, Wednesday afternoon. In his first media appearance since the Yankees finished back-to-back seasons without making the playoffs, Steinbrenner didn't pull any punches.

"I apologize," Steinbrenner said. "We did not do the job this year. We know what you expect of us and we expect the same thing of ourselves."

Last off-season, Steinbrenner went out and signed three of the biggest bats available in Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann. Collectively, the Yankees offense was putrid in 2014. The blame has been passed around to the players, manager Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long.

Steinbrenner was noncommittal as to which direction he would go this winter.

"I don't make rash decisions. I want to talk to all my people, including having long discussions with Cashman and really get into if anything could've been different or did these guys just have a down year, these three or four guys, but rest assured we are going to get to the bottom of it.

"If I do deem that somebody is liable and if I do deem that someone is responsible, that things could've been better, I will act."
