Albany Olympian Nick Delpopolo Fails Drug Test – Tests Positive for Marijuana
Throughout the Olympics we’ve been following local Judoka Nick Delpopolo as he battled for gold in London. Unfortunately for Nick, his trip has not gone as he had hoped.
Last week Delpopolo was ousted early in his attempt to medal in the 73-kg Judo competition, finishing 7th after losing a 1-0 decision to Nyam-Ochir Sainjargal of Mongolia. If that wasn’t disappointing enough, it has come out that Delpopolo then failed his post match drug test, testing positive for marijuana. According to the official IOC Disciplinary Commission Decision, “[Delpopolo] accepted the disqualification of his result from the men’s 73 kg Judo event of the London Olympic Games… The Athlete also explained that his positive test was caused by his inadvertent consumption of food (prior to his leaving for the London Olympic Games) that he did not realize had been baked with marijuana. The Athlete apologized to the USOC, his teammates and his fans and indicated that he was embarrassed by this mistake.”
Nick will leave London and return home tomorrow.
