In the first game returning from the All-Star break the Yankees (53-33) came away with a dramatic come from behind victory after Angels (48-39) starter C.J. Wilson shut them down for the majority of the game. Mark Teixeira and Russell Martin were the late inning hero’s for the Yanks delivering the game tying and what would be the game winning hits respectively.

C.J. Wilson was cruising through the Yankee lineup, in his seven innings of work Wilson gave up two runs on five hits and struck out seven.

Hiroki Kuroda went 7 1/3 innings gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out six.

In the third inning the Angels got on the board 1-0 when Erick Aybar drilled a solo home run to right field. It was Aybar’s third of the season.

Mark Teixeira hit a line drive two run home run over the left field wall in the bottom half of the third putting the Yankees on top 2-1.

In the seventh inning Albert Pujols led off with a single, Kendrys Morales was hit by a pitch and Mark Trumbo followed with a three run blast putting the Angels up 4-2. It was Trumbo’s 23rd of the season.

The Angels added their fifth run in the eighth inning when an Albert Pujols ground rule double scored Mike Trout.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Angels brought in reliever Scott Downs. Derek Jeter doubled to lead off the inning, Curtis Granderson walked and Mark Teixeira came up as the tying run and delivered with a three run blast to left field tying the game at 5. Teixeira's two home runs put him at 17 on the season.

The Yankees were not done in the inning Kevin Jepsen relieved Downs who had walked Nick Swisher before being pulled. Dewayne Wise pinch ran for Swisher and stole second base. Raul Ibanez then pinch hit for Andruw Jones and intentionally walked which set up Russell Martin’s go ahead line drive double down the right field line scoring Wise and putting the Yankees up 6-5.

Chad Qualls was the winning pitcher (1-0). Rafael Soriano picked up his 21st save of the season.

Derek Jeter scored for the 1,817th time of his career on the third inning Mark Teixeira home run passing Carl Yastrzemski for 16th place on the all-time runs scored list.

Robinson Cano singled in the bottom of the fourth inning extending his hitting streak to 16 games.

The Yankees play the Angels again on Saturday afternoon. Jerome Williams (6-5 4.46) will start for the Angels while Freddy Garcia (3-2 5.23) will go for the Yankees. Pregame coverage starts at 12:30, first pitch at 1:05 right here on 104.5 The Team ESPN Radio.
