Abandoned Dog Tied To Saratoga Tree For Days; Who Is This Cruel??

There's something about cruelty to animals that just is the lowest of the low. To take a defenseless creature capable of so much love, and abuse them is up there one of the most disgusting things a person can do.

That's why a discovery in Saratoga County is leaving Capital Region residents horrified at the plight of a local canine found by itself in the middle of the woods. The dog was discovered near Route 9 in Corinth tied to the base of a tree by his leash. There was no food or water left behind, and from the looks of the pictures taken the big dog only had three feet of leash.

In the Saratoga County Animal Shelter's Facebook post, they estimate that the dog had been tied up for at least two and possibly three days before he was found. How someone could do something like this, I'll never know. Fortunately, the dog is now safe and getting the attention he needs.

While there are very limited federal laws in the United States against animal cruelty, New York state law requires all dogs be provided with proper shelter when left outside, though this feels like it goes way beyond that. Here's the punishment under state statute 353-b 2(a):

Any person who owns or has custody or control of a dog that is left outdoors shall provide it with shelter appropriate to its breed, physical condition and the climate. Any person who knowingly violates the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a violation, punishable by a fine of not less than fifty dollars nor more than one hundred dollars for a first offense, and a fine of not less than one hundred dollars nor more than two hundred fifty dollars for a second and subsequent offenses.

It's hard to stomach that whoever left this dog defenseless and alone would only face a fine and could receive the dog back. Hopefully he finds the new, loving home he deserves after all he's been through and the perpetrator is prosecuted as much as possible.
