Abandoned Trains In Capital Region Woods! How’d They Get Here?
If you know where to look you just might find a set of trains parked in the woods of New York State, not far from the Hudson River. How do a handful of trains become abandoned and left to decay in the woods of the Capital Region? Are these ghost trains? Relics from days gone by?
This is the story of the trains that time forgot.
It has been a long time since the Golden Age of railroad transportation. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, riding the rails was one of the most effective ways to get from point A to point B quickly and with class. According to Spotlight News, there was a train accident in Manhattan that killed 14 people and changed train travel forever.
Following the NYC train crash, the Capital Region became a place to build and test a new line of electric trains. All Over Albany reports that the left behind rail cars were supposed to be part of a living train museum, in Danbury, CT, and still could be one day. In the meantime the cars continue to rot. At one time this plate (below) located inside one of the cars illustrated the General Electric brand from the city of Schenectady.
