Utah State linebacker Jake Doughty absolutely crushes Colorado State kicker Jared Roberts on an onside kick attempt.

Colorado State kicker Jared Roberts got his bell rung on Saturday night by Utah State linebacker Jake Doughty. Utah State was able to win the game 31-19. Doughty, a junior out of Sandy, UT, simply hit Roberts while the sophomore kicker out of Littleton, CO was trying to shield the football. The kicking team isn’t allowed to touch the football until it travels 10 yards.

I agree with the color commentator; why shouldn’t the Utah State player be allowed to hit the kicker? The kicker is trying to shield the receiving team from recovering the football. Why isn’t he fair game? It would’ve made sense if the official specifically said that the personal foul penalty was for a helmet-to-helmet hit. Without specifying the exact reason for the penalty, simply calling unnecessary roughness doesn’t make sense.

While I’m talking about kickers, I don’t know if I’d be able to look at myself in the mirror if I didn’t attach a link to Bruce Jacobs’ famous field goal breakdown. Bruce Jacobs (host of “Game On” weekdays 3-7pm on 104.5 The Team) ripped kicker Billy Cundiff for missing a game-tying field goal for the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots last season. He guaranteed that he’d be able to make a simple 32-yard field goal. Click here to see how badly things turned out.
