Earthquake Rattles Upstate NY While You Were Sleeping! Did You Feel It?

Experts say that earthquakes below magnitude 3 or so are rarely felt, however, some of the smaller quakes starting at magnitude 2.0 can be felt by people if the quake is considered "shallow".

Did you feel the earthquake on Wednesday morning?

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake was reported in upstate New York during the early morning hours of Wednesday morning according to a report by the Daily Voice.

At 1250 AM, the quake's epicenter was determined to be Saint Regis Falls in Franklin County and could be felt for 30 miles.

St Regis Falls is about 3 hours north of Albany, near the Canadian border.

New York is a state with a long and storied history of earthquake activity that has touched all parts of the state. But on occasion, Mother Nature can whip up a little Northeast excitement in the form of an actual earthquake, and that was the case on early Wednesday morning.

It was a mild one, but one that could have been felt here in Upstate New York if you were near the epicenter of it at around 1215 AM

According to data by the USGS, the registered 2.5 on the movement meter is one of the larger ones to hit our area in some time.

Back in March of 2022, the United States Geological Survey reported a 2.9 earthquake at 11:30 a.m. near Warsaw, Wyoming County, which is about 39 miles southwest of Rochester. and about 400 miles west of Albany.

In March of 2020, research shows that an earthquake was detected in South Glens Falls a bit bigger than the one in New York on Tuesday. The rumble in S Glens Falls registered a 3.1 on the movement scale according to the source.
