Exemption for Kyrie? Not Happening, Says New York City Mayor

It's hard to find a team in the NBA that has drawn more media attention than the Brooklyn Nets.

It all began with Kyrie Irving, who's unvaccinated status caused him to miss an entire portion of the season, and since then, has limited him to only playing home games. Outside of Irving, James Harden's relationship with the organization has soured, leading to his eventual trade out of the market.

Oh, yes, and the best player in the world is in the midst of missing two months with an injury.

New York City mayor Eric Adams has come under fire for his continued adherence to the vaccine mandate in NYC. Though he did make the decision to relax certain guidelines next week, others will remain in place, and Kyrie Irving may not be so lucky, after all.

Kyrie Irving Will Not Receive Any Exemption from Mayor Adams

In a recent update from New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, businesses in the public sector will see their vaccine mandates lifted, affective March 7th, which is next week.

The private sector, however, is not to lucky, as of yet, and that is where the Brooklyn Nets' star currently find himself. No changes in the private sector are imminent, leaving the Nets with the same amount of answers to their questions as they had in weeks and months past.

None.

Meanwhile, Mayor Adams spoke about Irving, saying that while he desperately wants to see a championship brought back to Brooklyn, he will not be giving Irving any exemption that he wouldn't give anyone else. He doesn't want to send the wrong message to the rest of the employees in the private sector.

As disappointing as that must be for Brooklyn fans, he's doing the right thing. Adams has said, on record a number of times, that he does not agree with the mandates as they currently stand. The worst thing he could do for the city, and himself, however, is lift mandates early, and allow another COVID outbreak to take hold of the city that never sleeps.

So, we will likely see Kyrie Irving on the court soon. It probably won't be March 7th, however, and it remains to be seen how much longer we'll have to wait.
