NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Council has approved a plan for a national indoor ice center in the Bronx that officials say would be the world's largest indoor ice skating facility.

The Kingsbridge National Ice Center was approved on Tuesday.

The New York Times says the vote came after city officials brokered a last-minute deal that won over Councilman Fernando Cabrera who represents the district. It calls for the developer to provide an additional $470,000 to address traffic and parking issues and to support local businesses and students.

The center is expected to open in 2017. It will have nine rinks and space for community activities and free after-school programs with tutoring and skating lessons.

The facility will feature hockey, figure skating, speed skating, synchronized skating, ice dancing and curling.
