A New York Attraction That Created Childhood Memories

According to WTEN, the Catskill Game Farm first opened its gates in 1933, becoming the first privately owned zoo in the United States.

Over the years, millions of visitors made the trip to see thousands of animals, including lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes and countless other species. For many New Yorkers, it became a summer tradition and a place filled with unforgettable childhood memories.

One of the farm's most famous residents was April the Giraffe, who was born there in 2002. Years later, April became an internet sensation when millions of people around the world tuned in to watch the livestream of her giving birth in 2017.

Unfortunately, financial struggles forced the Catskill Game Farm to close in 2006, ending a remarkable 73-year run.

Property Has Been Given New Life

The property, located at 400 Game Farm Road in Catskill, changed hands in 2012, and several areas have since been restored and repurposed. One of the biggest transformations came in 2019 when the former giraffe barn reopened as The Long Neck Inn, a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel where guests can spend the night on the former zoo grounds.

The inn features six luxury suites, six-and-a-half bathrooms, a chef's kitchen, game room, coffee station, a hot tub and a sauna. The sale also includes several original structures from the former zoo, including the old rhino house, a horse barn, storage buildings and other facilities spread across the massive property.
