A new plan laid out by Governor Hochul could see a total statewide cellphone ban in schools.

On Tuesday the governor of New York announced her plan to "transform" classrooms around the state. What she meant to say is that she's looking to disconnect our kids from their phones while they are in school.

Right now there are many schools across the state that have implemented their own cellphone restrictions for students, including here in Upstate New York. Many of those restrictions were met with criticism from parents who didn't want to be disconnected from their kids while in schools.

As of right now the restrictions would not be taking place until the next school year. It would be a bell to bell policy and the governor says that this policy would eliminate cellphone use during lunch and free periods as well. Governor Hochul said that they've had extensive conversations about the use of phones in school and feels the ban would benefit both students and teachers.

As a result of these conversations, I am announcing today a proposal that will transform our classrooms. Return them to a place of learning and that is a new statewide policy to make classrooms in the state of New York distraction free.

Many parents have their concerns about such a policy. One of the biggest being what would they do in an emergency situation and how easily would the child be able to be reached.

Obviously right now this plan isn't fully laid out, but they do say they have $13.5 million in the budget to roll out this policy for the next school year. We're sure they'll here arguments on both sides before anything is made official.
