Update; Swimming Advisory on Lake George

A number of people were celebrating America 250 on the Fourth of July by taking in all that Lake George has to offer. Boating, swimming, jet skis, picnics on the shore and fireworks in the sky. What 2 individuals didn't expect was to be bitten by a beaver. Now we have an official advisory.

On July 4th, DEC officials responded to a report of individuals bitten by a beaver on Turtle Island near campsites two and three. Apparently there is a beaver den close to where the campers were injured.

According to News10, the DEC says the beaver may be infected with rabies. The public is advised to avoid contact with beavers while recreating on Lake George. Here's what else the DEC has to say.

On Thursday July 9th DEC officials announced a water safety advisory in effect immediately for Turtle Island on Lake George in the Lake George Wild Forest. DEC warns swimmers to avoid areas around campsites 1-5 at Turtle Island through at least July 14, 2026, due to the presence of one or more beaver that may be infected with rabies.

Boaters and campers should exercise utmost caution and are advised to avoid contact with beaver while recreating. DEC continues to closely monitor the colony and requests visitors to report any sightings of beaver in the area demonstrating unusual behavior.
