It's speed week in New York State. That doesn't mean you can legally drive your vehicle over the speed limit this week, quite the opposite. New York State Police are ramping up patrols to crack down on state-wide speeding.

Yesterday I had to go downstate for the day and I can tell you our Troopers were out in full force. I took the Taconic Parkway from Columbia County down to Putnam County and in that stretch I saw 8 different patrol vehicles either with vehicles pulled over or parked in place looking for them.

Speed week runs from now until Sunday August 9th. This is the second detail of it's kind in 2026. The first, which took place June, state and local law enforcement issued a total of 56,578 tickets including 14,005 for speeding, 2,220 for distracted driving and 1,386 for impaired driving.

In New York in 2024, according to data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research’s Traffic Safety Statistical Repository, there were 34,042 police-reported, speed-related crashes, 315 of which involved a fatality, and more than 12,000 of which involved a personal injury.

These enforcement campaigns are crucial, as speeding continues to be a leading cause of fatal crashes each year in New York State. As always, we have zero tolerance for those who endanger others by driving recklessly, so I urge everyone to do their part to keep our roadways as safe as possible by following the speed limits, avoiding distractions and never driving while impaired. - Governor Hochul
