See the Original Toys That Inspired Winnie the Pooh, On Display In New York

Think back to your childhood and try to recall some of the toys you owned that, if you still had them today, would be worth some money. Did mom throw away your baseball card collection? Did your original Star Wars action figures get lost along the way?

Imagine having the original stuffed animal toys that inspired the characters from Winnie the Pooh. Most of the characters we know and love today, Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga, Tigger and even Winnie not only survived but are on display in New York State.

Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Kanga, and Eeyore are currently on display as part of the Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library's Treasures at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street in Manhattan.

The journey of these priceless toys began in 1921 when a boy named Christopher Robin Milne received a teddy bear, dubbed Edward Bear, for his first birthday. Edward went on to be named Winnie the Pooh and his companions were added over time. Christopher Robin's father was A.A. Milne, author of Winnie the Pooh.

These legendary toys have been in the United States since 1987 when they were donated to the New York Public Library. This collection, with the exception of Roo who was lost in an apple orchard in the 1930's, has been on display at the library since 2021.

Each piece appear to be in good condition but, according to the New York Public Library, much of the wear comes from Christopher Robin playing with them and by the Milne family dog.
