Animal Abuse Registry: Upstate New York

Few stories are more difficult to read than those involving animal cruelty, and unfortunately, cases of abuse and neglect continue to make headlines across the Capital Region and Upstate New York.

We've reported on animals allegedly abandoned and left to fend for themselves, disturbing hoarding situations, and cases involving dogs, cats, horses, pigs, sheep, and other animals living in deplorable conditions.

For animal lovers, the details can be heartbreaking. But knowing who has been convicted of animal cruelty can also help protect animals from being placed in dangerous situations in the future.

What You Can Do

If you witness suspected animal cruelty or believe an animal is in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement or an appropriate animal welfare agency.

In 2010, the Albany County Legislature established the Animal Abuser Registry through Local Law K. The registry, managed by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, was created to help protect animals and provide information to the public.

Why This Matters

As of our latest update, 42 Upstate New York residents are listed on the Albany County Animal Abuser Registry.

According to the registry, those listed have been convicted of animal cruelty and are prohibited from owning, possessing, residing with, or intentionally having physical contact with an animal.
