If you’ve ever made dinner plans in downtown Saratoga Springs, chances are Wheatfields came up at least once. After 38 years in the city, Wheatfields Restaurant and Bar served its final guests this past weekend.

The restaurant’s last Friday night service was followed by its final service on Saturday. For a place that had been part of Saratoga’s dining scene for nearly four decades, that’s a big goodbye.

It's A Bittersweet Goodbye

Owners Tim and Colleen Holmes announced the decision on Facebook last Wednesday. They had owned Wheatfields for the past 22 years and thanked everyone who helped make the restaurant a special part of the community. Think of all the date nights, family dinners, celebrations, and “where should we eat?” conversations that happened there over the years.

If Wheatfields was one of your favorite spots, there is some good news: the Clifton Park location is still open. The owners encouraged Saratoga customers to visit them there, so you can still get your Wheatfields fix. It just means a bit of a drive if you were used to eating downtown.

New Restaurant Will Move In Soon

And it sounds like the Saratoga space may not stay empty for long. Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus said a Capital Region buyer had already purchased the location.

According to Shimkus, the Albany group has a restaurant concept it believes will work well in Saratoga Springs. There’s no word yet on exactly what will take Wheatfields’ place.

For now, it’s goodbye to a familiar downtown restaurant that served generations of diners.
