BEWARE! Scammers Going Old School To Get Your Donations
Scammers are constantly coming up with new ways to bilk residents out of their hard-earned money. This time they are going old school. A letter is circulating through a town in Saratoga County. Police want you to beware of this latest scam.
According to the Ballston Spa Police Facebook page, there is a new scam that involves a letter that is being distributed in town. A resident brought this scam to the attention of the Ballston Spa Police Department and the Village Government.
Here is a copy of the letter that contains the scam. The resident's name is blacked out to protect their identity.
The letter asks for a one hundred fifty-nine dollar donation to the Ballston Spa Police Department. This is a scam. The Ballston Spa Police and the town's mayor said,
It has been brought to the attention of our Ballston Spa Police Department and our Village Government that the letter shown below has been sent to residents soliciting donations to an organization NOT CONNECTED WITH our Police Department despite the reference to “Ballston Spa Area Police Officers".
They go on to warn residents to not send money or provide any personal information to these scammers. These donations will not be given to the local police department. The letter does look legitimate with the plea of helping local law enforcement. It reads,
POLICE AND COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE ARE UNDER ATTACK-BALLSTON SPA AREA COMMUNITY POLICE ALERT
The Ballston Spa Police Department wants to get the word out about this letter solicitation to protect their residents from falling for this latest scam.
