Crane Pond Trail isn't a notoriously dangerous hike, but any terrain in the north country can become perilous with high winds, low visibility, deep snow, cold, and threatening hidden spruce traps.
Massive Search Effort Launched
According to the report, a coordinated search effort was launched involving the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Forest Rangers, and State Police. K-9 units, drones, and snowmobiles were used to cover the rugged terrain.
At approximately 6:24 p.m. Tuesday, Forest Rangers located Troth near the south end of Oxshoe Pond, accessible from the Crane Pond Trailhead, where he was found deceased. Authorities say there were no signs of foul play.
The Essex County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. Troth was transported to Glens Falls Hospital, where an autopsy is pending.
