Buying alcohol in America is a struggle, no matter who you are. Even just as a single person, you have to jump through so many hoops and follow so many laws that it may seem ridiculous by the time you actually get your hands on some.

Those same issues persist for businesses who must sell liquor, but one of their largest obstacles has just been removed.

Businesses Buying Liquor in New York

In the state of New York, businesses must rely on wholesale delivery for their liquor needs, and when those shipments fall through, they're out of luck. Take St. Patrick's Day. Say you run out of Guinness in the middle of your rush, there's no way to get more, you have to wait for the next truck.

You might ask, "well, why don't they just go to a nearby store and get more there?" Great question, but unfortunately, it's highly illegal in New York State. Or at least... it was.

New Liquor Laws

On December 5th, 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul signed in a new law that allows bars and restaurants to buy their liquor from local stores, and on March 5th, 2026, it became a reality, but there's a catch.

You can't just buy all your alcohol from your local liquor store, you're only permitted select quantities per week. Every bar and restaurant, no matter how busy, will be limited to six bottles of wine or liquor a week. This allows for distributors to stay in business, liquor stores to keep their supply for customers, and restaurants/bars to get help in times of need.
