Senior Greg Miller netted a pair of unassisted goals as the Cornell University men’s hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 4-1, in ECAC Hockey action from Lynah Rink. With the win, the Big Red improve to 10-13-3 (6-10-3 ECACH), while the Engineers, who lose for the first since January 26, drop to 14-12-5 (9-7-3 ECACH).

Miller got the scoring started at 8:33 of the first period, when he intercepted an RPI pass in the slot and wristed the puck past Engineers’ freshman goaltender Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Buccaneers).

Big Red senior Joel Lowry (Calgary, AB/Victoria Grizzlies) made it 2-0 just 1:09 later, on a rebound goal, off a shot by classmate Vince Mihalek (Willowick, OH/Westside Warriors). Fellow senior Erik Axell (Toronto, ON/St. Michael’s Buzzers) earned the secondary assist on Lowry’s 10th goal of the season.

Miller made it 3-0 with a shorthanded tally at 6:11 of the second stanza, after picking up a loose puck at the Cornell blue line and skating in alone on Kasdorf. Miller fired low to Kasdorf’s stick side for his second of the game and 12th of the year.

Rensselaer freshman Travis Fulton (Oakville, ON/Vaughan Vipers) turned in a terrific individual effort to pull the visitors to within 3-1 at 15:44 of the second period. Forcing the puck into the offensive zone, Fulton made his way to the front of the net before slipping the puck past Cornell junior netminder Andy Iles (Ithaca, NY/U.S. National Dev. Team) for his first collegiate goal.

Cornell senior John Esposito (Montreal, PQ/Notre Dame Hounds) added an empty-net goal at 19:28 of third to cap the scoring.

Iles (10-13-2) made 29 saves to earn the victory, while Kasdorf (10-3-2) stopped 22 shots, including 12 in the first period alone.

The Engineers return to the ice tonight, when they visit Colgate University (7pm).
